Titans appoint Andy Key as new Head Coach

Rotherham Titans are pleased to announce Andy Key has been appointed as Head Coach for the 2017/18 Greene King IPA Championship season.

Andy, 58, will join the South Yorkshire outfit from National Two North side Leicester Lions, once his commitments to the Lions have been completed at the end of the season.

Market Harborough born, Key spent the majority of his playing career at centre for Leicester Tigers where he enjoyed spells between 1975 and 1981 and again from 1987-92 and in between represented Bedford and Nottingham.

At Leicester Tigers, following his playing career Andy worked in a succession of management teams led by Dean Richards, Pat Howard and Marcelo Loffreda. His work included Backs Coach, Academy Manager and Head of Player Development.

His managerial experience led him and Tigers team mate Neil Back to join forces at Yorkshire Carnegie where Key was appointed Director of Rugby. A successful spell at Headingley resulted in Andy being named QBE Director of Rugby in 2009/10.

Subsequently, Andy has been Head Coach at Cambridge University and Director of rugby at Italian side L’Aquila.

Andy visited Clifton Lane this week to meet the players and observe a training session. Speaking afterwards Andy said, “I’m delighted to be coming to Rotherham Titans, I know Rotherham presents a challenge, but it’s a challenge I’m relishing; I like this sort of a challenge where we’ve got some work to do first of all.

“We’ve got to take on a squad that is maybe slightly down at this moment in time. The chips are probably down a little bit behind the scenes and we’ve got to try and identify why and what we can do to put it together.

“The players will have a big say and play a big part in this and they can do that and embrace it positively or they can do the opposite, but I’m one who wants to get there collectively. I’m sure if we all work hard together as a group we can start to get the club moving in the right direction.”
