Titans beat Sale FC to become National League 1 Champions!

Rotherham Titans were crowned National 1 champions and sealed a long-awaited return to the Championship with a dramatic 34–26 victory over Sale FC on a glorious afternoon at Clifton Lane.

Backed by a large and expectant crowd, the South Yorkshire side delivered a performance full of resilience, composure and attacking quality to confirm promotion after an eight-year absence from level two of the English game.

Knowing that just a single point would be enough to clinch the title, there was no sense of complacency from the hosts—only determination to finish the job in style against a Sale side renowned for their competitiveness.

The visitors from Heywood Road proved every bit as stubborn as anticipated, pushing Titans all the way in a fiercely contested encounter that remained in doubt until the very final moments. Yet, when it mattered most, Rotherham Titans found the decisive edge.

Rotherham began the contest with purpose and intensity, quickly asserting themselves in the opening exchanges. Their early pressure paid dividends as winger Jackson Barling crossed for the first of his three tries, igniting the Clifton Lane crowd. The wide man was in electric form, combining pace with sharp finishing to trouble the Sale defence throughout the afternoon.

Barling’s second try soon followed, capping a flowing move and not only extending the Titans’ lead but also writing his name into the club’s history books. The winger’s brace took him beyond Michael Wood’s long-standing record of 22 tries in a single season, set during the 2002/03 campaign—a remarkable individual milestone achieved on the biggest stage of the year.

Further first-half joy came through the ever-reliable John Okafor, who powered over for what has become something of a trademark big-game try. His score ensured Rotherham held firm control heading into the break, with Sale’s only reply in the half coming from their captain Andy Hughes.

Despite the hosts’ strong first-half showing, the contest was far from settled. Sale emerged after the interval with renewed intent, demonstrating exactly why they have been one of the division’s most respected sides this season. Their forward pack began to gain traction, and the momentum gradually shifted.

Hooker Nathan Langdon crossed to bring the visitors back into contention, before winger Nev Edwards finished smartly out wide to narrow the deficit further. Suddenly, what had seemed a comfortable afternoon for the Titans turned into a tense and nervy affair, with the scoreboard reading 22–19 and less than fifteen minutes remaining.

With promotion still hanging in the balance, the atmosphere inside Clifton Lane grew increasingly anxious. But once again, Barling rose to the occasion. Seizing his opportunity out wide, he completed his hat-trick with a clinical finish that ultimately proved decisive—not just in the match, but in securing the title itself.

Even then, there was late drama to come. Sale refused to go quietly, and Hughes grabbed his second try of the game to secure a bonus point and reduce the deficit to a single point at 27–26 with just minutes remaining. The tension was palpable as the visitors pressed for a potentially season-defining score of their own.

However, deep into injury time, Rotherham delivered the final, emphatic blow. Xavier Valentine crashed over from close range following sustained pressure, sending the home crowd into raptures and putting the result beyond doubt. Lloyd Hayes added the conversion, and moments later the referee brought proceedings to a close.

At the final whistle, the significance of the achievement was clear for all to see. Players, staff and supporters spilled onto the pitch in celebration of a journey that has seen the club rise from National 2 North just three seasons ago to champions of National 1.

Two promotions in three years represent a remarkable turnaround for the Titans, and as they look ahead to life back in the Championship, there is renewed optimism around Clifton Lane. On this evidence, they will not simply be making up the numbers.

For now, though, this was a day to celebrate—a hard-earned victory, a deserved title, and a long-awaited return to the second tier of English rugby.

Commenting on the pitch afterwards Titans Harvey Biljon said:

“That is a culmination of a lot of work over affair period of time and credit to the playing group for sticking at it.

I’ve thrown a fair bit at them and they’ve responded – it’s a very special thing to win silverware and win a competition and the Club can be really proud of itself this season.

“We have to give credit to Sale, they came to play today and they were never going to make it easy. I was speaking with Ciaran Parker and he said we were always going to make you work for it – and they did.

“We spoke at half time about making sure we stayed on top of our discipline, but we didn’t get that right.

“We spoke about just making sure we put in our defensive sets and then take our opportunities when they came – it may have taken until late in the game, but we got there.

“Going into the game there was a quiet confidence, there was quite a bit of emotion from myself, but I think the coaches were clear with the specific messages and the players brought the emotion and we had the game model in place to go and execute it today.

“The players were outstanding and them lifting me on their shoulders at the end was pretty special!”
